RNLI Test Launches New Lifeboat, the FCB2. 2 November 2007
Experimental lifeboat visits St Ives
05/10/2007
The RNLI’s experimental lifeboat FCB2 arrived in St Ives yesterday, ahead of its launch and recovery trials next week.
The St Ives inshore lifeboat Colin Bramley Parker met the FCB2 on her way into the town’s harbour.
The experimental boat will probably stay in St Ives until Tuesday, when it will be taken to Hayle for the trials, aimed at testing launch and recovery in heavy swells.
The RNLI hopes to replace its current Mersey class lifeboats with FCB2s, starting in 2011. The FCB2 has a top speed of 25 knots, compared with the Mersey’s 17 knots. Its water-jet propulsion gives greater manoeuvrability on the water, while the jets are less easily damaged than the Mersey’s propellers and rudders.
